The Italian Concerto was published by Bach as “Concerto nach Italienischem Gusto” (a concerto in the Italian style). Although the work makes use of many of the techniques of concertos, including ritornello, fragmentation and the alternation of forte and piano effects (accomplished by using the two keyboards of the harpsichord), Bach’s composition is unlike any orchestral concerto from the time, and the “Italian” style is leavened with a hearty sprinkling of Bach.
