Brahms: Symphony No. 3

In this video

Nearly 6 years after completing his second symphony Brahms finished his Symphony No. 3 in 1883. In this six years Brahms had written some of his greatest works including the Violin Concerto and Piano Concerto No. 2. Symphony No. 3 is the shortest of Brahms four symphonies. Although Richard Wagner had died earlier that year, the feud between the two composers had not yet subsided. Wagner enthusiasts tried to interfere with the symphonies premier and the conflict almost started a duel between the two factions. Music critic and friend of Brahms, Eduard Hanslick called the third symphony Brahms ‘as being artistically the most nearly perfect’ of the first three symphonies.

Composer: Johannes Brahms
Artists: Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Jaap van Zweden (conductor)
