Schubert: Symphony No. 9

In this video

After a seriousness illness in 1822, from which he partially recovered, Franz Schubert composed his last two symphonic masterpieces, the ‘Unfinished’ (1822) and the ‘Great’ (1825–6). Symphony No. 9 ‘Great’ is joyful and rhythmically vital. Showcasing Schubert the symphonist at the peak of his powers and are some of the most popular and enduring pieces in the orchestral canon.

Symphony No. 9 was originally called The Great in C Major to distinguise it from his Symphony No. 6, the Little in C Major, but now the subtitle is usually taken as a reference to the symphony’s majesty.

Composer: Franz Schubert
Artists: Staatskapelle Dresden, Herbert Blomstedt (conductor)
